How to Define Distribution Rules

Last updated 7 months ago

In Labelcamp, the rights are organized in the form of distribution rules.

Every object from the database has its own rules:

  1. The distributor

  2. The contracts (also inheriting from the rules of the distributor they belong to)

  3. The labels (also inheriting from the rules of the contract they belong to)

  4. The releases (also inheriting from the rules of the label they belong to)

DEFINE A DISTRIBUTION RULE

A rule is defined by several attributes:

  1. Its action (add, remove, remove parent rights)

  2. Its scope (a set of DSPs and territories)

The distribution of a release is the result of the calculation of all the applicable distribution rules (distributor + contract + label + release).

You will find a number of examples on this page.

ACTIONS

ADD

The action ‘ADD’ allows extending the scope of the distribution of an object (distributor, contract, label, or release).

For example: the below rule means that the user is adding WW distribution on both Apple and Beatport

REMOVE

The action ‘remove’ allows withdrawing part of its distribution scope from an object.

For instance: the below example means that the user is removing US territory on Apple

The rights of the object have evolved: DSPs still have WW rights, except Apple which is now WW -US.

REMOVE PARENT RIGHTS

The action ‘Remove parent rights’ allows to completely delete the inherited distribution of an object. For example, applying it on a release allows ignoring the rights from its label.

This action is useful if a product has an exceptional distribution, which shall never benefit from the distribution of its parent label.

SCOPE OF RIGHTS

A 'Right' applies to a scope, which is defined by 4 elements:

  1. DSP profiles (Download, Streaming, Charts/Edito, etc.)

  2. DSPs

  3. Continents

  4. Territories

It is, therefore, possible to add a rule such as “Charts/Edito +Spotify on Europe & United States”:

Note that all users interacting with the rights can leave comments in the dedicated field. Useful to keep a history of changes in the Rights section.

THE ‘Add an exception’ BUTTON

The ‘Add an exception’ button in the form allows simplifying the expression of certain rights.

For example, a user may want to add "Europe +US -FR", as in the below:

The exhaustive list of territories available for distribution rules and their associated continents & territorial groupings are available in the following document: Labelcamp_Territories & associated groupings
