Examples of Distribution Rules
Last updated 7 months ago
You will find below a certain number of usual cases of distribution rights, along with the method to translate these cases into ‘distribution rules’ into the application.
MULTIPLE DSPs ON A CONTINENT
Example: Label Apple +Spotify on Europe
This is the most common case: a label is distributed on multiple DSPs on a continent.
Action | Platforms | Continents |
Add | Apple + Spotify | Europe |

SPECIFIC TERRITORIES ON ONE OR MULTIPLE DSPs
Example: Label Apple +Spotify Europe, Beatport WW
Another common case, notably for distribution on YouTube or Beatport. This case requires the setup of 2 distinct rules:
Action | Platforms | Continents |
Add | Apple + Spotify | Europe |
Add | Beatport | WW |

Example: Label Apple +Spotify Europe, Youtube Content ID WW -UK
This case requires the setup of 2 distinct rules:
Action | Platforms | Continents |
Add | Apple + Spotify | Europe |
Add | YouTube Content ID | WW except UK |

RESTRICTIONS APPLYING ON A RELEASE (OR A LABEL)
Example: Album is US only
The album benefits from all the Platform Rights of its label but should be distributed in the US territory only. This case requires a single rule to exclude all other territories, while keeping Platform Rights identical:
Action | Platforms | Territories |
Remove | (empty) | Add an exception: US |

ONLY ONE OR MULTIPLE PLATFORMS
Example: Album on Apple only
The album benefits from all the territory rights of its label but is only distributed on Apple. This case requires a single rule to make sure Apple is the only authorized platform:
Action | Platforms | Territories |
Remove | Add an exception: Apple | (empty) |
